Qualifications for this role include:
• Due to nature of the program and in accordance with Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, only people of Indigenous descent (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) will be considered.

Job Summary

The Southern Medical Program (SMP) is a regional education site for the Faculty of Medicine’s (FoM) distributed Doctor of Medicine Undergraduate Program (MDUP). The SMP training sites are located across the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Tŝilhqot’in, Secwépemc, Dãkelh Dené, St’át’imc, Syilx, Nlaka’pamux, and Ktunaxa Nations, comprised of 54 First Nations Communities. There are 15 Métis Chartered Communities within the Interior region.

The SMP is delivered in partnership with the UBC MDUP distributed sites, UBC Okanagan (UBCO) and Interior Health (IH). The four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program is designed to prepare students for postgraduate residency training by providing a foundation for socially responsible practice, lifelong learning, and excellent medical care. The MD Program offers five admissions pathways including the General Admissions Pathway, Northern and Rural Pathway, Indigenous Pathway, Black Student Pathway, and MD/PhD Pathway.

This position is responsible for the coordination and delivery of services for Indigenous students which support the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s priority to improve health and wellness for Indigenous populations and communities (Indigenous Health - UBC Faculty of Medicine). Activities include, but are not limited to, recruitment, admissions administrative support, personalised and longitudinal student support, input into quality improvement initiatives, Indigenous community engagement, and communication activities.

As part of the provincial and local team the incumbent will support Indigenous applicants applying through the Indigenous MD Admissions Pathway in addition to the general MDUP admissions pathway. The incumbent will work closely with MDUP and SMP colleagues within Student Affairs and Admissions as well as UBCO colleagues to ensure that innovative and responsive student service models are developed and provided to support Indigenous students from pre-admissions activity through to graduation in the Interior.

Organizational Status
The position reports to the Manager, Administration and Operations, Interior. The position will take direction from the Indigenous Student Initiatives Manager for provincial MDUP deliverables.

Work Performed

Recruitment and Admissions Support

Supports and implements marketing and recruitment strategies for the Indigenous MD Admissions Pathway.

Coordinates outreach and recruitment activity targeted at prospective Indigenous applicants and supporting growth of the Indigenous MD Admissions Pathway such as pre-admissions workshops. This includes identifying and attending appropriate recruitment events, liaising with local schools and colleges through the Interior; conducting targeted information sessions, career fairs, and public events which may be in person or online.

Proposes new activities and processes supporting Indigenous student admission, engagement, and retention in the MD Undergraduate Program; implements once approved through appropriate Faculty and University channels.

Builds and maintains trusting relationships with internal and external parties in order to coordinate Indigenous student recruitment activity and partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Supports Indigenous applicants applying to the MD Undergraduate Program through the Indigenous MD Admissions Pathway and through the general MD Admissions Pathway; including, but not limited to, academic and non-academic inquiries, application evaluation and adjudication, answering prospective and current Indigenous MD applicant questions, advising on all aspects of future application, appropriate course selection, extra-curricular involvement, test preparation, interview preparation, and application and educational financing.

Performs non-academic evaluations involving interpretation and scoring of non-academic components of applicants’ files within guidelines and an understanding that each has a subjective nature.

Performs supplemental evaluations involving reading and interpreting comments in reference letters, applicant essays and reviewing files for errors, inconsistencies and completeness.

Acts as a first point of contact and source of information to applicants in recruitment sessions and information fairs, through all modes of communication including in-person and the online application system. Training will ensure knowledge about application requirements, prerequisite process, and all complex admissions policies and procedures.

Contacts applicants, verifiers and other institutions regarding discrepancies or inconsistencies in applicant files.

Participates in the Faculty of Medicine interview activity for the MDUP admissions pathways including the General Pathway, Northern and Rural Pathway, Indigenous Pathway, Black Student Pathway, and MD/PhD Pathway as required.

Refers complex admissions questions and decisions to appropriate MDUP Admissions team member and/or Indigenous Student Initiatives Manager for review and decision.

Student Support

Provides personalized and ongoing support to Indigenous medical students through the Interior, proactively engaging with students over the duration of their program.

Plans and delivers annual Orientation activities for Indigenous medical students in collaboration with the MDUP and SMP Student Affairs and program delivery colleagues.

Participates in the planning and delivery of provincial Indigenous initiatives and events, including the annual Indigenous Medical Education Gathering and Indigenous Graduation Celebration

Works with Student Affairs colleagues to oversee and continuously improve the mentorship program to support Indigenous medical students.

With the MDUP Student Affairs team and program leaders, supports services and programs for Indigenous medical students. The incumbent is not an academic advisor; however, is expected to help identify resources and liaise with those who are subject matter experts in support of students.

Participates in and supports activities of the MDUP Student Affairs Advisory Subcommittee and other FoM and UBCO groups as relevant.

Community Engagement

Supports relationship building between the Indigenous communities and people through the Interior and Faculty of Medicine faculty, staff and students.

Researches and builds partnerships and relationships with other UBCO campus units to develop, maintain, review and improve new initiatives.

Works with and supports student leadership on initiatives related to Anti-Indigenous racism.

Engages/participates in discussions on anti-racism policies and practices with MDUP Admissions and REDI (Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), Student Affairs (MDUP) and the Faculty of Medicine.

Acts on other projects as directed by the Manager, Administration and Operations Interior.

Works independently under minimal general supervision. Errors in admission could lead to negative precedent-setting cases, cause delays in the admissions process, and inappropriate acceptance or refusal of applicants, affecting the reputation of the program and university.

Is responsible for independent decisions within prescribed policy and procedures. Must exercise sound judgement. Must be able to justify decisions and provide rational when questioned or in the event of an appeal. Only highly complex decisions are referred to managers for assessment.

About the opportunity:

As a Quality Service Analyst at CLBC, you are responsible for representing CLBC as the primary point of contact for service providers. Position: Michif Housing Support Worker

Term of Employment: Full-Time Until March 31, 2028 (with possibility for extension)

Hours of Work: Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm (35 hours per week)

Reports to: Manager of Operations at Kikékyelc: A Place of Belonging

Position Overview:
The Michif Housing Support Worker will work with Métis youth and families receiving services from Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services who are experiencing precarious housing due to variety of circumstances to look for and secure suitable housing for their needs. The Michif Housing Support Worker will serve as the primary contact for clients who need housing assistance.

Key responsibilities of the Michif Housing Support Worker include:
• Researches and maintains a current list of accessible and affordable housing for individuals within the community
• Builds positive working relationship with landlords and property managers
• Assesses the needs and resources of individuals seeking housing support
• Supports individuals with housing applications, subsidy forms and other documentation needed to secure housing
• Supports individuals understand available housing and provide guidance in decision making
• Supports individuals locate and secure accessible and affordable housing, including obtaining required documentation and facilitating communication with landlords
• Assesses an individual’s need for start-up/move-in costs such as first/last months rent, utility set-up, and other one-time-only start-up expenses
• Supports individuals with budgeting support to maintain housing
• Follows up with individuals post-move-in to ensure they are well supported and prevent the loss of housing
• Completes documentation and reports in accordance with practice guidelines and reporting requirements
• Works as a positive and supportive member of our Michif Team
• Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:
• Completion of a certificate or diploma in the field of human/social services. A combination of work experience and education may be considered.
• A minimum of two years related work experience
• Demonstrated experience delivering culturally safe services and working respectfully with Indigenous Peoples.

Working Conditions:
• Travel in this position is required
• Potential for violence in the workplace
• Ability to perform the requirements of the job, which includes working independently with individuals who have experienced trauma, may be receiving services from the child welfare system, experience cognitive delays and/or challenges with substance misuse, mental health, or other trauma-related behaviours
• Supervision received – frequent consultation with the direct supervisor with a directive and regular review of the work performed. Must comply with the expectations of the Michif Practice Model.

Conditions of Employment:
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check
• Must have a reliable vehicle and maintain a valid BC Driver’s license
• As per Section 16 of the Federal Charter of Human Rights Act, preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous Ancestry.

Compensation:
• $29.17-33.49 per hour. Classification: Family Support Worker (Grid 12) of the BCGEU Indigenous Services Collective Agreement Wage Grids. Benefits and pension following a successful 90-day probationary period.
• BCGEU Indigenous Service Employees are entitled to receive a retention bonus at the end of each fiscal year (until expiration of current collective agreement).
