Our Work
Recognizing the diverse needs and experiences of Métis individuals, a distinctions-based approach to health is vital. By acknowledging and addressing unique cultural, historical, and socio-economic factors, we can ensure equitable access to healthcare services and promote the well-being of Métis communities.
The programs and services we offer to Métis in BC, align with MNBC's Strategic Plan and allow us to continue advocating for our Nation, in a culturally safe way.
Métis Nation British Columbia, in partnership with BC Cancer and the University of British Columbia, launched a pilot HPV self-collection program called ‘CervixCheck’ in 2017 in Northern British Columbia. This report highlights the successes, barriers, and impacts of the CervixCheck program for Northern Métis women and individuals with a cervix from 2017 to 2023.
We were thrilled to see that effective January 29, 2024, the Province of BC/Provincial Health Authority/BC Cancer Agency officially adopted cervical self-screening as the standard of care, thanks in part to the contributions of our research project on HPV self-screening. This milestone marks a significant advancement in cervical cancer prevention.
