The Métis Gauntlet Heritage Arts Workshop Series

MNBC’s Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language and the Amelia Douglas Institute are pleased to present the Métis Gauntlet Heritage Arts Workshop Series, taught by Métis artist Kaija Heitland. Over 4 months of virtual workshops, participants will learn how to create their own pair of Métis style gauntlets. At the end of the workshop series, the gauntlets will be featured in a temporary exhibition at the NEW Amelia Douglas Institute in Surrey.

The workshop series is open to 12 BC-based Métis artists. The workshop series will start in September 2023 and run until December 2023. All workshop meetings will be held virtually and are currently scheduled as follows (note some workshop dates may change):

  • Wednesday, September 13 - 5:00 - 8:00pm (PST)
  • Wednesday, September 27 - 5:00 - 8:00pm (PST)
  • Wednesday, November 1 - 5:00 - 8:00pm (PST)
  • Wednesday, November 15 - 5:00 - 8:00pm (PST)
  • Wednesday, December 13 - 5:00 - 8:00pm (PST)

Please note that this workshop is for Métis artists with intermediate skills in hand sewing and using mediums such as beading, tufting, quillwork or embroidery. WORKSHOP MATERIALS PROVIDED

  • Prepared and cut leather for the glove and forearm portion of the gauntlets.
  • Artificial sinew and appropriate needles
  • Templates for future glove making.
  • Fur trim
  • Interfacing/stiffener
  • Heavy wool for upper portion of gauntlets
  • Materials list and eco-friendly reusable packaging and organic cotton bag
  • PDF pattern and instructions
  • $50 to offset the cost of additional materials for the gauntlets.


As artists, we know that color and material vary based on personal preference. As such, the following required items will be the responsibility of the artist to provide.

  • Scissors
  • OLFA/X-Acto knife
  • Materials to adorn the gauntlet gloves. Artists will be able to choose the materials they would like to adorn their gauntlets with from either beadwork, quillwork, tufting or embroidery. Artists must have intermediate knowledge and experience in their medium of choice prior to starting the workshop.
