Ma Nîķi Seniors Home Renovation Program
The Ma Nîķi Seniors Home Renovation Program supports low-income Métis citizen homeowners with financial assistance in renovating their homes to improve safety and livability and allow them to age in place. This program provides a once-per-lifetime non-repayable grant of up to $20,000 per household.
Program Eligibility Criteria:
The applicant must:
- Be an MNBC citizen, verified by providing a copy of their MNBC citizenship card or confirmation from MNBC Citizenship Ministry.
- Be a resident of BC for at least one year, verified by providing one piece of Government of BC-issued photo identification, including BC Identification Card (BCID) or a valid Driver’s License;
- Be 60 years or older. If the application is for a couple, only one applicant needs to be over the age of 60.
- Not receiving financial support from another Ministry of Housing program.
- Have a total gross annual household income of $46,000 or less for a single applicant or $66,000 or less for a couple. The most current Notice of Assessment (NOA) from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is the only acceptable proof of income. Please provide the most current NOA for all applicants. If you do not have your Notice of Assessment, you can obtain one by logging into your CRA My Account at My Account for Individuals - Canada.ca or calling CRA at 1-800-959-8281; and
- Own, and occupy as principal residence, the property where the renovations occur. The residence cannot be on First Nations land, Crown Land, or any other land where the Citizen does not have ownership of the land where the residence is located, except for Citizens who own a Mobile or manufactured home subject to the Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act are eligible as well as units in a strata or equity co-op.
List of eligible renovations and repairs:
- Floor coverings;
- Electrical (e.g. lighting fixtures, outlets);
- Fire and carbon monoxide alarms;
- Plumbing, (e.g. toilet, sink, shower replacement);
- Roofs, chimneys, and fireplace replacement;
- Replacement of siding, including mobile home skirting/leveling;
- Heating (HVAC, hot water tank, Central Air conditioning);
- Water supply and septic system;
- Door and window replacement;
- Insulation (ceiling, walls, including repair of any water damage);
- Drywall and painting to repair wall damage; and
- Mobility access (grab bars, wheelchair ramps, walk-in shower, etc.).
For citizens who live in a multi-unit building (e.g. condominium, townhouse, or apartment) the repairs or renovations are limited to the interior of the unit, and you must gain consent or permits required to start the work.
List of ineligible renovations and repairs:
- Cosmetic renovations;
- Landscaping and fencing;
- Driveways and sidewalks;
- Basement developments and additions;
- Decks;
- Garages and outbuildings;
- Appliances and furniture;
- Engineering and third-party reports;
- Non-critical repairs; and
- Improvements or repairs quoted or completed by the homeowner, or a business they have partial or full ownership of.
*Quotes for renovations and repairs should be provided along with the business license and GST number of the qualified contractor expected to perform the work.*
