Deryl is a mom, a grandma and a great-grandma born and raised in Prince George, BC. Her mother’s family is originally from Manitoba and Ontario. She comes from a long line of sewers and crafters. She has been making regalia, ribbon skirts and shirts for over 20 years.
The ribbon skirt was traditionally worn for ceremony; colonization introduced ribbons and embroidery to traditional skirts. The modern-day ribbon skirt is a hybrid, but the meaning of wearing a skirt for Indigenous women is essential. During the workshop Deryl will share the meaning while participants make a modified doll size shirt or skirt.
