MNBC Stands with Communities Impacted by Wildfires

Statement – For Immediate Release

Surrey, BC—Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) stands with the Kelly Lake Métis Settlement Society as uncontrolled wildfires grow in the direction of the community. At this time, evacuation orders have been issued. We would like to remind those under evacuation orders not to wait to see smoke or fire before evacuating.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by the wildfires near Kelly Lake Métis Settlement Society and elsewhere, including throughout the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

We recognize the devastating impact wildfires have on communities, individuals, and the land. For many Métis, the experience of evacuation can echo the pain of historical displacements. We hold space for this pain while affirming the necessity of evacuation orders for safety. To all those currently away from home, we hope for your safe and swift return.

MNBC offers deep gratitude for the first responders, volunteers, and organizations participating in response and recovery efforts.

If you are injured or experiencing a life-threatening incident, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately.
