Senior Environmental Protection Officer
$77,718.46 - $99,452.15 annually, plus 3% recruitment and retention adjustment
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the effective protection, management and conservation of BC’s water, land, air and living resources. It leads work on climate preparedness and leads plans to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets.
The Senior Environmental Protection Officer protects the environment by providing authoritative and professional advice to others on the Environmental Management Act and the management of industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials. The role manages authorizations of high-risk, complex and unique sites/situations in the region,
conducting source monitoring to study impacts of toxins and wastes to lead compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment.
Qualifications for this role include:
• Masters of science degree or higher in environmental management, applied science or natural sciences with three (3) years of related experience; OR,
• Bachelor of science degree in environmental management, applied science or natural sciences with at least five (5) years of related experience.
• Registered in good standing, or immediately eligible for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area, i.e., an Agrologist with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists (BCIA), or a Professional Geoscientist or Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
• Valid BC Class 5 (or equivalent) Driver’s Licence.
Related experience must include the following:
• Experience related to environmental protection, industrial and municipal waste management in at least 2 of the 4 aspects below:
• Experience with reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies.
• Experience conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting related to waste discharges.
• Experience with environmental planning processes such as Waste Management Planning.
• Experience with hazardous material spill response, special waste, and contaminated sites.
