Skills Training, Employment & Post Secondary (STEPS)

STEPS has experienced another record year in supporting Métis learners and job seekers across British Columbia, with unprecedented demand for post-secondary education, skills training, and employment supports. In the current fiscal year alone, STEPS has committed over $10 million in direct supports to more than 1,800 Métis Citizens pursuing education, skills training, and employment-related opportunities throughout B.C.

As a result of this significant uptake and demand, the Ministry of Skills Training, Employment, and Post-Secondary (STEPS) is implementing a waitlist for post-secondary and skills training, wage subsidy, and paid practicum funding requests over $5,500, with the exception of Early Childhood Education training and pre-arranged training cohorts.

Applications received will continue to be reviewed and assessed; however, eligible applications over $5,500 will be placed on a funding waitlist and processed as additional funding becomes available. While STEPS will continue to explore all available funding opportunities, placement on the waitlist does not guarantee that funding will be available within the current fiscal year.

STEPS recently implemented an updated Standards of Practice, which has improved administrative efficiency and increased the Ministry’s ability to support more Métis Citizens while ensuring fairness and consistency in program delivery across B.C.

STEPS is also actively working with our funding partners to advocate for additional funding resources to support Citizens in obtaining their education and career goals.

Citizens are encouraged to contact their regional STEPS office to discuss alternative supports, resources, and available options.

Contact information for regional offices can be found further down this page.

Ministry Mandate and Goals

The Ministry of Skills Training, Employment, and Post-Secondary Education (STEPS) is focused on increasing Métis representation in both the labour market and post-secondary systems through culturally relevant, community-informed programs and services. STEPS works closely with provincial and federal partners, post-secondary institutions, employers, and Métis Chartered Communities to identify and remove barriers to success. Through direct service delivery, policy development, and strategic partnerships, STEPS works to advance Nation priorities and labour market goals that increase educational attainment and support Métis clients in building sustainable, fulfilling careers.

STEPS has dedicated teams who deliver a variety of post-secondary education, skills training, and employment-related programs and services. Each of them is outlined below:
