Statement – For Immediate Release
September 29, 2026: SURREY, BC – Métis Nation British Columbia strongly condemns the cowardly actions of white nationalists in their attempt to intimidate the people of Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc. This blatant racist act is traumatising not only for the Tk’emlups, but for all Indigenous people. We have suffered greatly and continue to suffer from the legacies of colonialism and residential schools.
For Métis people, the residential school experience is a dark but important part of our shared history with First Nations and Inuit peoples. While Métis voices and experiences in residential schools are often overlooked in the national conversation, the impact has greatly affected our people and we still struggle today. Métis are disproportionately caught up in the criminal justice system, and we lack jurisdiction over Métis youth in the child welfare system. These current challenges are the byproducts of past policies of institutionalized racism in Canada and the attempt to wipe out our culture and heritage, to assimilate us.
Yet, we are still here. We are a resilient people and while masked men try to deny our experience, our strength is demonstrated by our survivors, their families and all Métis who endured profound loss. We honour them by protecting and preserving our culture, our language, and our Métis ways of life.
On the eve of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we stand in support of the Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc and all Indigenous people. Racism has no place, fear and intimidation will not work and together we are strong.
