Millions of Trees Program

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has received funding from Natural Resources Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program - Indigenous Funding Stream. Through this agreement, MNBC has launched the Millions of Trees Project, a program designed to support the well-being of Métis communities while enhancing environmental sustainability and climate resilience. This program is currently funded through March 2031.

This program will focus on three key areas:

  • Mass planting in wildfire-affected areas
  • Community planting
  • Métis Capacity Building

Mass Planting

Plant up to 3,000,000 trees across B.C., focusing on reforesting wildfire-impacted areas. This work is being carried out in partnership with veritree, and MNBC's Ministry of Skills, Training, Education & Post-Secondary (STEPS).

Community Planting

Engage Métis communities throughout B.C. to plant 4,000 trees in urban areas, fostering community involvement and ownership. Planting activities are Métis-led and conducted in collaboration with local governments, businesses, and Métis communities to secure planting sites and resources.

Métis Capacity Building

This initiative will provide training and employment for 120 Métis Citizens to enhance knowledge related to sustainable forestry practices. It is being delivered in collaboration with MNBC's Ministry of Skills, Training, Education & Post-Secondary (STEPS), and partners such as Natural Resources Canada's National Tree Seed Centre.

Program Status:

The program is in the early implementation phase. A pilot planting project is planned for late-Spring 2026.
