The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has received funding from Natural Resources Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program to plant over 3 million trees in British Columbia until 2031.
This program will focus on three areas:
- Community planting
- Mass planting in wildfire affected areas
- Métis Capacity Building
This page will be updated periodically as the program progresses.
Community Planting
MNBC has capacity to procure and plant up to 4000 trees in partnership with municipalities, First Nations, and other local governing bodies across BC.
Benefits for local governments partnering with MNBC through this community planting initiative include:
- Subsidized tree and planting costs.
- Improved health and well-being of both Métis and non-Métis through tree planting in urban areas, thus reducing heat island effects and increasing social benefits.
- Advancing local reconciliation goals through a climate action project with an Indigenous government.
- Expand local urban forests and tree canopies, especially in equity-denied/tree-lacking areas.
- Improved biodiversity within local ecosystems.
- Carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas reductions, habitat restoration, and improved biodiversity and human well-being for Métis and non-Métis in BC.
