Newly Released: Professional Standard 9 Video for BC Educators
Did you know that within the K-12 system in British Columbia, there are 9 professional Standards for BC Educators? The Standards serve both as ideals to which educators aspire, and expectations to which they can be reasonably held. It is important for Métis families to know about these standards.
Standard 9 of the Professional Standards for BC Educators is responsive to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and UNDRIP. It requires that educators respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. It expects that educators will contribute towards truth, reconciliation, and healing, and that they will foster a deeper understanding of the diversity of Indigenous of ways of knowing and being, histories, and cultures.
The video was created with the understanding that all educators are at a different place in their learning journey, and framed as an invitation for deeper learning. It was created in consultation and collaboration with representatives of Métis Nation BC, the First Nations Education Steering Committee, BC Teachers’ Council, the BC Teachers’ Federation, the Federation of Independent School Associations in BC, the First Nations Education Authority, and the Ministry of Education and Child Care. It is one example of the many ways in which MNBC continues to support the transformation of the K-12 Education system in BC through relationship building, advocating for accountability and equity, and collaborative practice.
The video is intended to encourage educators to keep learning, examine their own biases, incorporate Indigenous perspectives into the curriculum they teach, and continue to build respectful relationships with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. We hope educators will embrace their professional responsibility, and that Métis communities recognize the steps being actively taken to create safer learning environments that are inclusive of Métis knowledge, culture, and history.
