SURREY, B.C. (June 08, 2023) – In an ongoing effort to advocate for Métis in BC, Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is seeking $104 million from the Province of British Columbia to support programs and services for over 24,000 Métis citizens and 98,000 self-identifying Métis people in B.C. MNBC is determined to improve quality of life for its citizens through culturally distinct programs and services.
In November 2021, MBNC and the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation finalized a letter of intent (LOI) that renewed a shared commitment to strengthen their relationship and advance reconciliation with Métis people in B.C. The LOI proposes a new whole of government approach to Métis relations as a partnership between MNBC and the Province that respects Métis self-determination. Respectively, the province has acknowledged that Métis in BC have certain Aboriginal rights as one of the distinct Indigenous people under Section 35 rights of the constitution.
The request for funding aims to provide opportunities including; governance, strategic programming and reconciliation engagement.
“Métis Nation British Columbia is committed to ensuring the Province recognizes the importance of distinctions-based funding for Métis people in the Province”, said Colette Trudeau, CEO of MNBC. “In the era of reconciliation, MNBC takes every opportunity to raise the profile of the Métis Nation and advocates strongly for core capacity for our governance, communities, and citizens.”
