Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant Overview

Purpose
The purpose of the Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant is to support the continuation of Métis heritage arts through community workshops that promote knowledge and skill sharing. Métis heritage arts are defined as artistic mediums and practices that were commonly done by our Métis ancestors, are connected to historical Métis communities, and are well documented as being integral aspects of Métis artistic expression. This includes:

  • Storytelling
  • Music (fiddling, spoonplaying, etc.)
  • Quillwork
  • Traditional Clothing Making(moccasins, etc.)
  • Beading
  • Jigging
  • Carving
  • Tufting
  • Weaving (finger weaving, etc.)
  • Hide Tanning

The Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant is for Métis people to host workshops or mentorships on a Métis heritage art form. Applicants to this grant are responsible for recruiting Métis artist instructors and learners and creating an accessible learning opportunity for Métis in their community.

Grant Amount: Up to $5000

Note: Workshops with smaller budgets are still encouraged to apply.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) citizen.
  • Workshop participants must be Métis living in BC.
  • Workshops must teach a Métis heritage art as defined in the ‘Purpose’ section.
  • Instructors must be able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience teaching a Métis heritage art(s).

APPLICATION DEADLINE
The grant application deadline is Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 11:59PM (PST). Please note: Project end dates must fall between March 1, 2024, and December 1, 2024. You will be required to provide a project timeline as part of your application.

Eligible Expenses

  • Artist, Elder and/or Knowledge Carrier honorariums and wages (or related gifts).
  • Workshop space rental.
  • Workshop supplies. All supplies, including those created by the artist, must be provided at cost.
  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages for the workshop. 

Ineligible Expenses

  • Expenses not directly related to the workshop.
  • Expenses that take place before the start of the grant period.
  • All expenses must fall within the indicated start and end date of the grant. Expenses incurredbefore or after the grant period will not be eligible.
  • Business development costs (for example, printing business cards, massproduction of an item, logo design, website fees).

Selection
The Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language selection committee will review all applications and award grants based on the following criteria:

•Application completed in full with all supporting documents before the applicationdeadline (late applications will not be accepted).•Applicant meets eligibility criteria.•Clear and realistic lesson plan detailing learning objectives and outcomes.•The budget is realistic, and expenses are reasonable and relevant to the community workshop.

Reports
Recipients of the Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant are required to submit a final report for their projects by December 1, 2024. These reports will provide a detailed account of the project's activities and budget. The report should demonstrate how the workshop aligned with or have met the objectives of the Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant.

Failure to provide a final report will result in the applicant being excluded from future funding opportunities through the Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language.

Promotion
All projects funded through the Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant are subject to promotion by MNBC at their discretion. Promotion may take various forms, including but not limited to:

  • Inclusion on MNBC's and Amelia Douglas Institute’s official website.
  • Promotion through various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.
  • Email marketing campaigns.
  • Creation and distribution of promotional posters.

MNBC reserves the right to promote projects in a manner they see fit to raise awareness and visibility for the Métis Heritage Arts Workshop Grant recipients and their projects. Grant recipients must credit MNBC for funding in all posters, materials and communications relating to the workshop.

Heritage Arts Materials Grant Overview

Purpose
The purpose of the Heritage Arts Materials Grant is to support Métis artists in British Columbia to practice Métis heritage arts or contemporary Métis arts (learn more about those definitions here) by being able to access ‘traditional’ materials. Métis heritage arts are defined as artistic mediums and practices that were commonly done by our Métis ancestors, are connected to historical Métis communities, and are well documented as being integral aspects of Métis artistic expression. This includes:

  • Storytelling
  • Music (fiddling, spoonplaying, etc.)
  • Quillwork
  • Traditional Clothing
  • Making (moccasins, etc.)
  • Beading
  • Jigging
  • Carving
  • Tufting
  • Weaving (finger weaving, etc.)
  • Hide Tanning

Grant Amount: Up to $250 (note: applicants planning to purchase animal hide can apply for up to $500)

Eligibility

  • Must be a Métis Nation of British Columbia (MNBC) citizen.
  • Must be currently living in British Columbia.
  • Must be a Métis artist creating or learning to create Métis Heritage arts or contemporary Métisarts.

Eligible Expenses

  • Beading materials (antique beads, sinew, Melton wool, stiffened felt, beading needles, etc.)
  • Jigging materials (moccasins, regalia, etc.)
  • Musical instruments (fiddle, spoons, etc.)
  • Tufting materials (hollow hair, traditionally tanned hides, etc.)
  • Weaving (looms, silk thread, etc.)
  • Hide tanning materials (handmade tools, etc.)
  • Quillwork (quills, dyes, ethically sourced birch bark, etc.)
  • Traditional clothing making materials (traditionally tanned hides, furs, fabric, etc.)

Any items purchased before the grants are awarded are ineligible. For eligible expense-related questions, please contact the Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language team at chl@mnbc.ca. All materials purchased with funding from this grant must be for the applicant's own use and not for resale.
