75 Métis Athletes on Team BC attend the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax

Halifax, Nova Scotia  - MNBC’s Minister of Sport and Active Living, Minister Dean Gladue, had the privilege of representing Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Minister Gladue rallied and motivated the young athletes with his encouraging words prior to competition day and marked a moment of pride for our Métis communities.

Minister Gladue presented a sash to Leah Parker, our very own athlete from the Prince George Métis Community Association during the pre-game prep rally. “It’s important for our youth to not only represent our [Métis] culture but also understand the significance of the sash as they wear it with pride,” said Minister Gladue. “I was honoured to sash Leah Parker and introduce this young athlete as the BC flag bearer for the opening ceremonies…”

Over 75 Métis athletes represented Team BC while competing in various sports at the Games. Additionally, 23 Métis staff including coaches, Elders, and managers attended this event. Team BC brought home 159 medals from NAIG 2023 making them the second-highest medaling delegation at NAIG.

MNBC’s Ministry of Sport and Active Living is driven by the desire to improve the health and well-being of BC’s Métis people and is always looking for ways to support our athletes.
