I was working at a job I was not enjoying and decided it was time for a change. lt was almost too late to sign up for the classes I wanted to take, only 2 spots remained... but I decided to give it a shot. I applied to the Métis Ernployment and Training Program for assistance with funding for my courses, thinking it was a long shot considering time was running out.
As the beginning of the program was approaching fast I was worried I had waited too long. lt was just 2 weeks before the course started. I received a letter in the mail stating I had been approved for funding! This gave me just enough time to give my employer my 2-week notice and to prepare for the start of the program.
The Bridge Watch Rating Program started on February 0L 2016. I was excited to be going back to school and for what was ahead, though found myself quite nervous. My classmates and teachers were great, this made for a fun learning environment making my time there fly by. We visited Sea Span in Vancouver, the Coast Guard in Victoria and went on a ride with B.C. Ferries. The hands on firefighting and survival craft training were great as well as learning many knots and splices.
I was very fortunate to obtain employment before the end of the program, and started working the day after the program ended. I now love my job and am excited to learn more and advance in the future. Without the support and funding from the Metis I would have never had this opportunity, and would not be in the position I am now.
Thank you MNBC and Métis Employment & Training Program!
