Hello, my name is Jarret Desjarlais and I felt I needed to write about my experiences with the Metis Employment & Training Program. When I graduated from high school I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had always gone to work with my dad on weekends to make extra money. He owned his small plumbing company. After a few years of working with him and working as a pipe layer in the construction industry full-time, I decided it was time for me to get ticketed in the trade so I would have some job security and have many opportunities across Canada to work. I decided to become a plumber and registered with the ITA as an apprentice. I talked with the staff in Surrey and got funding for my first year of school. I applied at a local and private institution in Burnaby called Pacific Vocational College. I actually did my first and second year back to back and then followed with my third year training about a year or so after. It took a while to get back for my fourth year because I had two beautiful daughters in two years. I was funded all the way through the four years of technical training. I love my field of work and I loved going to school. All in all, I really appreciate the staff of the Metis Employment & Training Program that made it possible for me to achieve my success as a full-fledged journey person.
