I remember the day very well when I received the call from the Metis Employment and Training Office informing me I was successful in my application for funding. I was going to college. I was going to earn a Business Administration Diploma. I was going to receive an education. I was so happy and knew then my life would be changed forever for the better.
Facing college as a mature student was appealing, yet intimidating. I had both life and work experiences which helped me to see how the world made sense of things, but now had the determination to learn the theory behind the practical. I knew I could do it, and when I obtained a 100 percent course grade in Business Math the last semester, it reaffirmed my goal to become educated.
I received a Business Diploma in 2006 with honors, but I wasn't finished yet. I joined the co ‐ op education department that summer and was successful in securing a 4 ‐ month, Human Resources Assistant position with Sun ‐ Rype Products, Ltd. After turning down a permanent position with Sun ‐ Rype in early Fall that year, I returned to Okanagan School of Business to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2009. During the summer of 2007 I began a new co ‐ op education position with Interior Health’s Human Resources.
School has brought me many new experiences and generated a growth in me which has surpassed my expectations. It's brought me new opportunity, new friends , and new perspective in life. It had its demands of assignments, reading, studying, and more assignments and studying. It had its sacrifices of missing outings, missing family get together, and limited time for oneself.
Today I continue to work for Interior Health in Talent Acquisition and Marketing. I love my career and wouldn't be where I am in terms of work/life balance without the support of the Metis Employment and Training Program.
I had a dream of obtaining a Bachelor degre e. That dream became reality because I was able to afford to return to school at a mature age and not have the worry of having to support my way without too much difficulty.
