Volunteer Recognition Nominees

Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the contributions community volunteers have made this past year. Though we cannot gather, vital programs and services continue to be offered through the efforts of these volunteers around the province.

The work happening at the community level reminds us of Leah Dorion’s traditional Métis story, The Giving Tree. In this story, Métis families leave supplies in the tree’s cache for others in need. Similarly, today, our communities are a Giving Tree; a hub for citizens to connect and access programs and resources. This past year we have heard of volunteers who have handed out PPE, organized grocery supports and hampers, spent numerous hours making Elder calls, and even driving other Citizens to appointments. None of these supports would have been accessible without the support from volunteers.

As we know, Métis people living in B.C. have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have lost their jobs and cannot afford the necessities of life such as rent, utilities, and groceries. Thus, MNBC staff have prioritized accessing multiple rounds of funding for our citizens. A large portion of COVID-19 funds has been provided to the Chartered Communities as they are the primary contact to those requesting support. Because of these community relationships and the work of volunteers, we have supported thousands of Métis citizens who struggled financially due to the pandemic.

Regardless of how long you have been volunteering, your contributions mean so much, and we thank you for the incredible work you have provided.

To recognize the amazing volunteers who allowed COVID-19 supports to reach the hands of over 3,000 community members and counting, MNBC asked each of the 38 Chartered Communities to nominate a volunteer from their community.

Heartwarming nominations came from boards, community members, co-workers, grandchildren, and friends. We hope that this will be an annual recognition of the hard work our people do for our Nation. Today, we are recognizing those nominated from across the province with the gift of an honorary sash.

We are also highlighting these volunteers in the slideshow below. As an act of recognition for all their hard work, we hope you will take a minute to watch the slideshow and see the faces of the volunteers who have made a difference in your community.
