MNBC Statement on Discovery of 160 Graves on Vancouver Island

“Every week we are hearing the news about Indigenous Nations preparing to do the heart-breaking and re-traumatizing work to find our lost children. The St. Albert Métis started this work last week, and this week, the Penelakut Tribe found 160 graves at the site of the former Kuper Island Indian Industrial School. My heart goes out to the Penelakut, and all the Nations whose children never returned from Kuper Island. There is still a long way to go in the process of truth and reconciliation.  Indigenous Nations have always known the truth of what happened at these schools, and it is only now that the rest of Canada is beginning to understand.  Only when the full truth is known, that I hope we will be able to start reconciliation in earnest.”
