Let’s Talk about Mental Health on #BellLetsTalk Day 2021

January 28th marks the annual #BellLetsTalk Day – an initiative started in 2010 to encourage dialogues around mental health and wellness. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell donates towards mental health initiatives in Canada by contributing 5¢ for every applicable text, call, tweet, social media share, and more (https://letstalk.bell.ca/en/). 

As Métis, it is important we share our stories of resilience, of struggle, and of hope with mental illness. Our roots in resilience and our connection to community can help us work together to overcome the stigma that surrounds mental illness. At MNBC, we are working to keep the conversation alive year round. Remember, mental health is something that we all must look after. Remembering mental health as an essential component of everyone’s life and creating a space where the cultivation of wellness is the norm makes life better for us all. Be kind to yourself, and pursue what makes you well.

While we recognize the good that this day can bring, we must also ensure that we work to keep the conversations and action happening year-round. Let today be a day that inspires momentum. Today and everyday, we must recognize the resilience of those impacted by mental health struggles.

Crisis line workers assist with problem solving, establishing support services, developing safety plans, conducting suicide risk assessments, offering referrals, and safety monitoring for at-risk individuals. These services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for Métis people throughout the province of British Columbia.

BounceBack is a free skill-building program designed to help adults and youth 15+ manage low mood, mild to moderate depression, anxiety, stress or worry. Delivered online or over the phone with a coach, you will get access to tools that will support you on your path to mental wellness.

Foundry is a province-wide network of integrated health and social service centres for young people ages 12-24. Foundry centres provide a one-stop-shop for young people to access mental health care, substance use services, primary care, social services and youth and family peer supports. Foundry centres can currently be found in eight communities across BC. Foundry BC is now offering virtual drop-in counselling sessions by voice, video and chat to BC’s young people ages 12-24 and their care-givers! Visit www.foundrybc.ca/virtual for more information. Here2Talk connects post-secondary students with mental health support when they need it. Through this program, all students currently registered in a B.C. post-secondary institution have access to free, confidential counselling and community referral services, conveniently available 24/7 via app, phone and web.
