Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) has been working closely with the B.C. Ministry of Education on the K-12 Education Restart Plan for September. MNBC has been involved in the discussions that have led up to Minister Fleming’s announcement today regarding students impacted by COVID who will be returning to school this fall. MNBC realizes how important it is for families to both know what to expect and to better understand what their options are in September.
MNBC recently distributed a survey to get feedback from families to hear their concerns regarding a return to school this fall. Over 600 responses have been collected so far.
According to interim results from the survey, over 50% of Métis families in B.C. are unsure if they will be sending their children to school on September 8th.
While the survey results are still being compiled a number of families indicated they had serious concerns regarding a number of aspects pertaining to sending their children back to a school setting. For example, some families stated they are worried about physical distancing and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). Other families expressed a concern regarding what happens to working parents if a school goes into a lockdown position and children must be at home full-time.
MNBC also asked families to identify what they anticipated as being the most important supports they will need as part of an effective return to school plan. They expressed a need to have better access to technology (i.e. laptops and high speed Internet access) and online learning assistance.
As we move closer to restarting school on September 8th, MNBC will continue to work directly with the province on the K-12 Education Restart Steering Committee and the K-12 Partners Group and will provide recommendations on the development of:
- Health and safety planning
- Educational resources and professional learning
- Equity and inclusion
- Educational programs
