(Ottawa – April 13, 2017) It was an historic day for Métis people today with the signing of the Canada-Métis Nation Accord by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Métis National Council. The Accord marks a significant step towards a renewed government-to-government relationship based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation and partnership. The Accord outlines the ways in which the Government of Canada and the Métis National Council and its Governing Members will work together to set priorities and develop policy in areas of shared interest.

The Accord was signed during the first Métis Nation-Crown Summit in Ottawa. President Clement Chartier of the MNC, and each of the five Governing Members, including President Clara Morin Dal Col of Métis Nation British Columbia signed the document on behalf of the Métis Nation.

President Morin Dal Col called the signing of the Accord, “A tremendous step forward for the Métis Nation” and said that, “I was honoured to be able to sign such an important document on behalf of the Métis people in British Columbia.” She added, “The provisions of this Accord will enable us to help make a difference for Métis people in British Columbia and elsewhere in the Métis Nation.”

During the Summit, the MNBC President talked about the importance of establishing such a relationship with Canada saying that, “The relationship that we have with you Prime Minister and your government is very important to us. Through such relationships we can have open and frank dialogue, we can talk, not only about the problems, but also about possible solutions, and then we can get on with the job of implementing those solutions.”

MNBC Vice-President Lissa Smith, who witnessed the signing by the President said, “We have waited many years for a Canada-Métis Nation Accord and today marks an incredible achievement of the determination and will of the Métis people. We now have a mechanism to move forward and receive the recognition of our inherent rights as Métis people.”

Provincial Métis Youth Chair Cassidy Caron described the significance of the day and the Accord signing stating, I want to share how incredibly important it is and how honoured I am to have had the opportunity to be involved as a Métis Youth in the decisions that are being made today between our Métis government and the Canadian government. The importance of youth involvement in making decisions to pave a bright and healthy path forward for our Métis youth was also underscored by the Prime Minister in his opening remarks and throughout the duration of the discussion.” The Provincial Métis Youth Chair added, “I have high hopes for the vision the Prime Minister shared with us regarding the creation of opportunities for our Métis youth to be the best they can be.”

MNBC Executive member (Board Secretary) Susie Hooper said, “It was truly an honour to be a witness to this historic event,” and MNBC Executive Member (Treasurer) Daniel Pitman said that, “It was a special honour to be able to attend the Crown-Métis Summit and to witness such an historical event as the signing of the Canada-Métis Nation Accord”.
