Surrey, BC (Oct. 25, 2016) - Métis Nation British Columbia President Morin-Dalcol at the BC Post-Secondary Truth and Reconciliation Summit Vancouver BC on October 19th & 20th 2016
Leaders from public post-secondary institutions and Aboriginal institutes of higher learning met to discuss how to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report Calls to Action within the public post-secondary education system in British Columbia.
The B.C. Public Post-Secondary Truth and Reconciliation Summit took place at the Wosk Centre in Vancouver on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, 2016.
Participants discussed the role that post-secondary institutions can play in reconciliation. Summit working group sessions focused on:
• Engagement with Indigenous communities
• The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and Curricula
• Incorporating Indigenous protocols into institutional practice
• Indigenous research
President Clara Morin-Dalcol stated “A deeper understanding and a greater knowledge of who the Métis are is critical in the indigenization of post-secondary institutions. Education must be framed by an understanding of the Métis learning context: the culture, the history, colonization, the nationhood of the people, and how our ways have been misinterpreted. Post-secondary institutions and government need to understand this context if they hope to work together to develop initiatives that will actually strengthen Métis post-secondary education.”
Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson and Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad addressed the summit, which was jointly hosted by Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) and the Ministry of Advanced Education.
