NIMA Event Updates (Feb - Apr, 2018): Women’s Series Tuesday Hot Bowl Holder!

NOTE: NIMA will be starting a new grant cycle of programming in April … we are looking for your feedback about attending 3 outdoor-style events during Summer 2018: 1. San Josef Bay Gathering 2. Rugged Point / Kyuquot 3. Youth Paddle in Strathcona Park (must take place June 29-July 1 as per funding). If you are interested in one or more of these events, please let the Project Coordinator know available dates for you / family members this summer! No point in planning ahead if we don’t have members available to attend!

We are seeking individuals who would like to join a sub-committee of the Board; Cultural Safety. If you have knowledge or an interest in this area, please get in touch with our Board of Directors ASAP at This volunteer position needs to be filled within the next two weeks. Thank you!


Women’s Workshops: Health Talk on Winter Wellness February 27th Sewing Session – Hot Bowl Holder with Melody Lang @ Robron 6-8 pm & March 20th Essential Oils & DIY Project with Stephanie Welsh 6 – 8 pm– Robron Centre Join in this Series of Workshops for a health talk on Wellness & 3 workshops that will really engage your mindset! Snacks and refreshments will be on hand. Please RSVP so we have enough supplies for attendees!

Aboriginal Walk/Run Program: Tuesdays & Thursdays starting now – mid April @ Heartstrong Fitness

This program will host participants who can commit to a 12+ week program to improve their health by walking or learn to run. The goal is to be running or walking 10 K by the end of the program! Incredible opportunity for all ages ~ youth, adults and elders! Program to start in late January 2018.


Food Skills For Families | Diabetes Canada ~ STARTING APRIL 2018 Robron Centre TBC REGISTRATION OPEN

This is a healthy eating program offered to adults 18+ and aims to teach and encourage healthy cooking in a fun relaxed atmosphere. This program strives to enhance cooking confidence and skills with a focus on improving healthy eating choices and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. The curriculum is built on Canada’s Food Guide and is a 6 session program that is 3 hours of learning and prepping meals per evening. 12 Seats are available ~ come with a cousin or bring a friend! Participants are asked to commit to attending all 6 sessions; all supplies and materials are provided.


North Island Potluck: Saturday April 21 @ Sacred Wolf Friendship Centre, Port Hardy (Event to be confirmed)

NIMA is planning to host a Metis Potluck in Port Hardy for April 21st at the Sacred Wolf Friendship Centre; more details to come as the planning has just began! Please note on your calendar … confirmation and details to come soon!

Beading Circle: Thursdays, February 22, March 1, 8, 15 from 6 – 8 pm Robron Join the fun and learn different techniques for freehand and loom beading. Lots of supplies on site for those starting out! From easy to difficult – you pick your pattern and the circle will help you along with your project! FREE to anyone of any age!

North Island Metis is looking for a YOUTH REP to attend conferences and give the board input on youth needs!

YOUTH PADDLE -> We are waiting on another grant to come in and it looks like we will be able to host another YOUTH PADDLE June 29-July 1 in Strathcona Park. There should be room for 24 youth paddlers plus 6 adult chaperones. We will be looking for kayaks and canoes to use (renting what we can’t source for free). Please contact Project Coordinator Kealy if you are interested in participating.
