MNBC Mourns the Tragic Loss of Métis Citizen Micah Messent
Posted by MNBC Communications on
Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) and the community of Courtenay, BC are devastated to hear the news of one of its Métis citizens who, on his way to a United Nations Environment Assembly in Kenya, died tragically in the Ethiopian Airlines crash last Sunday.
Micah John Messent, originally from Courtenay, BC, was a proud registered Métis Citizen of Métis Nation British Columbia, and member of MIKI’SIW Métis Association. Micah was passionate about the protection of the environment and meeting other indigenous youth and leaders from around the world to make a difference in the challenges of his generation.
Micah was a Vancouver Island University graduate and government employee for B.C Parks Service. He had dreams of being a lawyer and was planning to attend law school where he felt he could affect the most significant change in advancing the efforts for reconciliation.
‘When we lose a young member of our community, the whole Métis Nation mourns. The life Micah lived was one of great service to his ancestors and his natural environment. He will be missed not only for who he was but for what he may have accomplished,’ says Clara Morin Dal Col, President of the Métis Nation British Columbia.
An incredible loss to his family, friends and all who knew him. His contributions and the footprint he left in the hearts of all who knew and loved him will never be forgotten.
Our hearts go out to Micah’s family and loved ones, his Métis communities in both Manitoba and here in BC. Micah will be forever missed.
MNBC extends our sincere and deepest condolences to all the families and loved ones affected by the many lives tragically lost. May they all find peace in the memories of their loved ones, and the mark they made in this world.
