May 8th marks day five of Mental Health Week 2020.

Thank you for following along with our posts this week. Though we are coming to an end of our daily Mental Health Week posts, know that this is a dialogue that must continue year-round.

To anyone journeying through a mental health concern, or those supporting a loved one, we believe in your strength and your resiliency. Be kind to yourself, and pursue what makes you well.

May 7th marked day four of Mental Health Week 2020, as well as National Child and Youth Mental Health Day.

This year, the message of National Child and Youth Mental Health Day is “I care about you” (https://may7icare.ca/).

We recognize that many of our Métis Youth are facing mental health concerns; findings from Ta Saantii Deu/Neso: A Profile of Métis Youth Health in BC (McCreary Centre Society, 2018) show that Métis Youth is less likely than non-Métis Youth to rate their mental health as positive. Métis Youth was also more likely to experience an anxiety disorder/panic attacks, depression, ADHD, or PTSD than their non-Métis peers.

Showing that we care can positively impact the mental health of Métis Youth. In fact, Métis Youth experiencing a mental health condition who had supportive adults or peers involved in their lives were less likely to have attempted suicide.

While there are many factors that contribute to the wellness of our children and youth, building relationships and showing care creates the potential to significantly support mental health. This May 7th, take time to reflect on how we can show that we care today, and every day. For further information on mental health and Métis Youth, see the infographic.


May 6th marked day three of Mental Health Week 2020.

We recognize that our mental health and well-being can have an impact on substance use, and using substances can impact our mental health and well-being. May 5th marked day two of Mental Health Week 2020.  

As we #GetReal about mental health and well-being during Mental Health Week, we are highlighting one of the many inspiring stories from Resilient Roots: Metis Mental Health and Wellness Magazine. In “My Story: A New Freedom”, a beautiful story of resiliency is shared.


May 4th marked the beginning of Mental Health Week 2020 (https://mentalhealthweek.ca/).

This year, the Canadian Mental Health Association is asking us to #GetReal about mental health.

Each business day this week, we will be sharing posts to build awareness around mental health in our Métis Communities. Today, we shine a light on the resilience that embodies us as Métis.
