Métis Nation BC Métis Early Years Family Outreach – Announcement and COVID Update

Posted by on

The Métis Early Years Program was developed by Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) for Métis families with children birth to 8 years. The program is focused on helping families build a network of support that provides children with opportunities for early learning and childhood development. The Métis Early Years Navigators assist families to access programs and services that are available in their region and connect them to community and culture.

Over the past few months the primary focus of the Métis Early Years program has been supporting families through COVID-19. The Métis Early Years Navigators have been reaching out to families with children between the ages of birth to 8 and finding out how they are doing during the pandemic and determining what supports they may need. The Navigators have reached out to nearly 750 families over the past few months.

We are happy to share that while many of our families are facing challenges, overall families expressed that they are doing well and that they have used the social distancing restrictions as an opportunity to enjoy quality time together. Many families have expressed a desire for Métis cultural resources to assist them in learning more about their Métis heritage while at home. As a result, throughout the summer the Métis Early Years Program will be sending cultural resources and activities to families enrolled in the program to ensure they have the opportunity to share and experience Métis culture together as a family.

“Staying connected with our Métis families and supporting them ensures our Nation is strong and being there for them during COVID-19 is critical,” said MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col.

To show our appreciation to our families for taking the time to speak with us, all families were entered into a draw to win an iPad. The winners were the Williams family from Coquitlam and the Aitchison family from Prince George. Congratulations!

As we slowly transition into the “new normal” we recognize that COVID-19 will continue to affect our Nation for the foreseeable future. The Métis Early Years team is committed to continuing our outreach and supporting families. We encourage families that have Métis children birth to 8 to enroll their children in the Métis Early Years Program and stay connected to MNBC and to one another. The strength and resiliency of our Métis families continues to inspire us all.
