MNBC Announces Métis Early Years Program

Métis Nation British Columbia’s vision for Early Years is for Métis children to experience a state of well-being that allows them to live healthy and happy lives, and to fulfill their full potential as individuals, members of their family, their community, the Métis Nation, and as British Columbians.

In 2018, Métis Early Years Community Engagement sessions took place across the province, and community members shared their hopes and aspirations for their children. The Métis Early Years Program is a direct result of that engagement and has been developed based on what we heard from families.

The Métis Early Years Program focus is on connecting children aged birth to eight years to their communities, the Nation and Early Years programs and services in British Columbia. Métis Early Years Navigators will be reaching out to Métis parents to involve them in the program and provide them with cultural supports and connections.

Providing quality culturally-appropriate Early Years programs and services to Métis children is important to address the socio-economic and health challenges faced by Métis families to support a strong sense of cultural identity from a young age, and comply with their rights as Indigenous people. ~ MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col

The Métis Early Years Program is part of MNBC’s Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) strategy in which Métis children and families throughout British Columbia are provided with culturally relevant, self-empowering ELCC programs and supports that focus on children and families first to support strong Métis Nation families and communities across the lifespan – beginning at birth. The program will promote the healthy growth and development of children and families through experiences grounded in Métis culture and community ways.
