MNBC & Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society Signed Memorandum of Understanding

Abbotsford, BC (February 2, 2015) - On January 28, MNBC celebrated the significant new relationship with Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society in Kamloops. In recognition of common interests and as an expression of the desire and intent to expand and strengthen the relationships developed between the organizations, the Parties hereby declare their intention to work collaboratively for the betterment of Métis child and family services, programming, policy and advocacy. The Parties will seek to work together in the following areas:
- To facilitate a working relationship between Métis Nation BC and Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society
- Collaborate on and support Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society’s programming as it relates to Métis people in the Kamloops, Merritt and surrounding areas.
- Support programming proposals that support the intent of this relationship; and
- Help ensure future child and family services, policies and planning by the provincial government and/or by Metis Nation BC that affect Métis constituents in the Kamloops, Merritt and surrounding areas have been reviewed by representatives of Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society and other concerned parties prior to implementation.
The Métis are a distinct Aboriginal people who exist as a nation and who acknowledge and recognize nationhood principles. It is an integral function of a nation to ensure the present and future care and protection of its children and families, which can be carried out throughout the traditional familial and communal structures within Métis communities.
Métis Nation BC is the recognized Métis political body in British Columbia, by both the provincial government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.
Métis Nation BC has established a Ministry of Children and Families with the mandate to support and advocate for the delivery of services for Métis children, youth and families in British Columbia. Métis Nation British Columbia develops and enhances opportunities for our Métis Chartered Communities and Métis people in British Columbia by providing culturally relevant social and economic programs and services.
Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society was formed in July 1998 with a vision to ensure that all Métis children, youth and families live with love, honour, dignity and respect knowing they belong to a strong, proud People with a unique heritage and cultural identity.
MNBC’s Minister for Children and Families, Daniel Pitman, states “The signing of this MOU is significant… it’s an opportunity to ensure that Métis children and youth in care are properly identified as Métis and their cultural plans are reflective of being Metis”. Minister Pitman added “This MOU is another opportunity to continue building on the existing relationship between MNBC, MCFD, MCCF, and Métis Program and Service Delivery Agencies to ensure the welfare of Metis families has a voice in this province".
Métis Nation BC and Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services Society agree that a collaborative approach to support Métis child and family services and programming needs for Métis People in Kamloops, Merritt and surrounding areas is needed.
