Métis Youth British Columbia

Overview

Métis Youth British Columbia (MYBC) is a voluntarily driven youth governing body that represents and advocates on behalf of Métis youth at the community, provincial and national level. MYBC ensures that Métis Youth are involved and engaged in all levels of governance, decision-making and policy-making, both within and outside of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC).

MYBC was originally established as a result of community consultations that were held across the Métis Nation homeland in 1998. Since 1998, MYBC has evolved from focusing solely on programs and services, to an institution of governance that now participates fully in the governance processes of MNBC. MYBC now functions as a pillar within the MNBC governance structure, as the elected representative body for Métis youth. MYBC continues to work within all Ministries of MNBC to assist in the design and implementation of programs and services for Métis youth.

Métis Youth British Columbia is composed of thirty-seven (37) community Métis Youth Representatives, seven (7) Regional Youth Representatives and one (1) Provincial Youth Chairperson. From the Committee of Regional Youth Representatives, an Executive is formed which includes the Provincial Youth Chairperson, Co-Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. Regional Youth Representatives are elected by youth in their region through the MNBC Provincial ballot-box election process. The Provincial Youth Chairperson is provincially elected and holds a voting seat on the MNBC Board of Directors. The Provincial Youth Chairperson is responsible for the Youth Ministry as MNBC Minister Responsible for Youth.

As representatives for Métis Youth in BC, the Committee of Regional Youth Representatives work within their communities across the province to ensure youth representation at the community level. The MYBC Committee of Regional Youth Representatives is currently striving to fill all thirty-seven (37) Local Community Youth Representative positions on each of the MNBC Community Executive Boards across the province. Each year MYBC hosts an Annual Youth Meeting in conjunction with the MNBC Annual General Meeting. This meeting is to bring together the 7 Regional Youth Representatives and Community Youth Representatives for consultation, feedback and approval on the direction of MYBC.
