In May of 2006, the Métis Nation British Columbia and the Province of British Columbia signed the Métis Nation Relationship Accord to signify a positive working relationship for the 69,475 (2011 Census) self-identified Métis in British Columbia. This accord set out the objectives to address health, housing, education, economic opportunities, Métis identification and data collection as well as any opportunities for engaging in a tripartite relationship with the federal government.

On Louis Riel Day in 2016 on November 16th, the Métis Nation British Columbia and the Province of British Columbia signed a NEW Relationship Accord "Métis Nation Relationship Accord II" to renew the committement to work together for the betterment of Métis people throughout BC. 

The renewal accord committs to the additional areas in the betterment of Métis people in British Columbia: 

  • children and families
  • information sharing
  • justice
  • wildlife stewardship
